Alan Robinson has been racing on and off for nearly 45 years. He began racing when he was 12 and for the earlier part of his career he focused on drag racing. Robinson raced various cars including a ’55 Chevy, a ’66 El Camino, a ’72 Comet and a ’65 Chevy Station Wagon that was fast enough to make Robinson a national record holder. He also won a few bracket points championships at Highway 258. Once Robinson learned that Coastal Plains Raceway (CPR) was opening its gates in 2000 he jumped at the chance to get out on the circle track. However, his enthusiasm was not enough to make him as competitive as he was on the drag strip. In fact, he was nicknamed “Crash” in his first week because he ‘hit every corner there is’. Despite the nickname, "Crash" managed a third place finish in the Street Stock points in 2000 and a fifth place finish in 2001. Another activity Robinson devotes time to, is his band. They play old gospel and it is a priority for him. In 2005, he only ran a few races at CPR because the racetrack schedule conflicted too much with the band’s schedule. When CPR changed its schedule last season to run every 1st and 3rd Saturday, Robinson asked his band for every other weekend. Luckily, they obliged him and he only missed one race in 2006. Robinson raced his way to a top ten finish in all but one event this season and he even got himself a win in his ’80 Camaro. At season’s end, Robinson had earned his fifth place position in the final point standings. Next year, Robinson hopes to run the full schedule as long as the band will allow it, and he also hopes to have as much fun as he did in ’06.
"I forget how old I am when I crawl in the car," he says.
