Twenty years ago, Marvin Padgett of Maple Hill raced at Rocky Point, but after only one summer he packed away his helmet until Coastal Plains Raceway (CPR) opened it’s gates 14 years later. An eager, yet inexperienced Padgett built an ’85 Camaro to run at CPR but his rookie season was rough on the driver.

“I got lapped twice in a 30-lap race in the beginning,” Padgett recalls. “But with people helping me I was getting better and better.”

After racing the ’85 Camaro for a few years Padgett decided to build a new camaro, which he raced for another two or three years. Now he races a ’78 Camaro that he also ran last season. The 51-years-young Padgett ended 2006 with two wins, 12 top-five finishes and a top ten in every race, putting him in 2nd place in the final point standings.  With 2006 being his best year yet, Padgett plans to run the same car again in ‘07.

“Same car, same motor, same everything,” he says of his set-up for next season.

With his modesty and shyness, the ever-unruffled Padgett is the silent victor of the Super Stock class. He credits his wife Betty with his success on and off the race track, and with her by his side, 2007 looks to be another promising year for Padgett.
